Easter Sunday's Message
April 16, 2017

Be Raised With Christ

Where did Easter get its name?

Some see it as coming from the Saxon language and is thus similar to the German word Ostern and the Teutonic word auferstehn which means resurrection.

The early church knew Easter as pascha which is Greek for the Hebrew word, pesach which means Passover.  Jesus died at Passover and is thus the Passover Lamb whose shed blood inspires the angel of death to pass over us so that we can have eternal life.

Others believe the name Easter has pagan roots and that it comes from the Anglo-Saxon goddess of the dawn Eostre whose festivities are in the spring when the sun begins to come earlier in the day.  Some say it comes from the Babylonian goddess Astarte, also known as Ishtar.

Even if Easter has pagan roots, that’s no reason for Christians to reject the name.  Christians are all about converting things to Christ!  A Christian easily speaks of Thursday even though it was named after the Norse god, Thor.

Have fun this Easter.  If things such as egg hunts have pagan roots, use those things for God’s glory!  But make sure you use Easter as a reminder to be raised with Christ.  When he died on the cross he was not only crucifying our sins, he was crucifying our sinful nature.  Thus he wants us to be dead to self and to let his Spirit raise us up in a new life (Romans 9:11). When you let Jesus live through you in a new life you exhibit the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness, temperance – which means you never lose your temper (Galatians 5:22-25).

Please come to Sunday School at 9:00 and worship at 10:30.  Bring as many people as you can to celebrate Christ’s resurrection with us!  We need you here in order to make our celebration complete.

Pray that the Holy Spirit will fill us and live through us so that every moment may be a moment of spiritual resurrection or new life.  Old grievances, anger, irritations, resentments and inadequacies will be washed away and only Jesus and his fruit will remain.  This will be a foretaste of glory divine!

Sunday I’ll be preaching from Romans 6:1-14 about, “Be Raised with Christ.”  Please pray that God will preach through me, lead through Sallyann and minister through our church to bring resurrection to Arden Arcade, Sacramento, California, the U.S. and the world!

With love in Christ,
Dr. Jim Meek

Fall Festival 2017
Carnival & Clothes Closet
Coming October 21, 2017

See the fun they had last year. ►To Watch Click the Photo

Our Annual Fall Festival 2016 was a great success. Over all we had around 105 visitors and 50 volunteers helping with this event. We can say with confidence that everyone had a lot of fun playing games, winning prizes and enjoying the food.

This event wasn't only about having fun, we wanted to be a blessing to our community as well by giving away an assortment of clothing. We gave away so many clothes and even had lots of left overs which made it possible to donate them to the Union Gospel Mission's Clothes closet. Our prayer team also had the opportunity to talk and pray with some of our visitors.

We thank God for His provision and thank everyone for all the hard work which helped make this event possible! We are looking forward to next year when we can do this again

We need your help to make a great impact in our community through this year's event.

We are looking for helpers for Promotion, Games & Prizes, Clothes Closet, Prayer and Food. Contact Greg Horton for more information (415) 684-4549.
