Welcome

HEAR GOD

October 19, 2025

Samuel Davies’ mother, like Hannah in the Old Testament, prayed for a son.  When her prayer was answered, she named her baby Samuel, just as Hannah did.

As a child, Samuel worried each night that he would die and not go to heaven, so each night he prayed that he would live through the night.

In his 20s he received assurance of his salvation and felt called into the ministry.

Later in life, his wife and small child died, and he almost died from tuberculosis.  He nevertheless kept his faith in God and became one of the greatest preachers in American history.

In one sermon he said that we must give thanks for the light of the sun, for the bounty bursting forth through the earth, for the water bubbling from springs, flowing out to the sea and for how God supplies the angels, the ravens and even the grass of the field.

He listened to nature, Scripture and God.  He helped issue in the Great Awakening by stressing a personal relationship with God.  The freedom he preached helped bring about the Revolution and our creation as a nation.

Sunday I’m preaching on “Hear God” from Psalm 19.  We’ll talk about “Hear Nature’s Witness,” verses 1-6; and “Hear God’s Word,” verses 7-14.  Like Samuel, we’ll learn to listen to nature, Scripture and God, and we’ll pray that God will bring a great awakening!

Love,

Jim Meek
